The Winter Festival of Lights (WFOL) is a public illumination festival which lights up the winter nights, and the largest of its kind in Canada. Readers Digest Canada recently named Niagara Falls as one of Canada’s 10 Most Festive Christmas Cities based on the strength and presence of this winter festival.
WFOL 120 Displays
It’s estimated that 1.5 million visitors to Niagara Falls view the light displays from mid November to mid January every year. Over 120 displays are on show with around 3 million individual lights used in the intricate displays and stylised street illumination, mostly centred along the Niagara Parkway in 5 kilometres of animated LED lighting. All the displays are free to view and enjoy, although voluntary donations are accepted with proceeds going towards funding the festival’s lights and displays.
Fallsview District Displays
The Fallsview district is where the biggest and most spectacular displays occur – and stands as one of the best vantage points for the fireworks displays over the falls and river every Friday night during the festival’s duration. The pedestrian crosswalks leading to and from Fallsview Casino are decked out in lights, and the surrounding parklands are transformed into a winter wonderland. The whole district becomes an eye-catching display – with the centrepiece being the iconic 520-foot Skylon Tower, itself the focus of a regular computerised light show. Over a dozen industrial projectors use the tower as an illuminated canvas throughout the festival.
Three Month Celebration
The festival spirit continues with the New Year, when a national televised concert and fireworks display captures the attention of the nation in the hours leading to the midnight extravaganza.
The three-month festival fills the winter season with colour and light, especially along the river and in the tourist cluster of the Fallsview district. The festival is a signature feature of the celebratory atmosphere in Niagara Falls and a point of pride for Canada in general.
