The family-owned Caroline Cellars Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake initially started off as a vineyard that would produce vinifera grapes and sell them to local wineries. Having understood the wine-making industry after years of interacting with various wineries, owners Rick and Frieda Lakeit decided that it was time to construct their own winery. The work on the winery started on their 26-acre home farm in the year 2000. So by the time the construction of the winery was completed in 2002, wine vintages of 2000 and 2001 were ready for sale. The winery was named after Rick’s late mother Caroline who had supported them during the initial days of their farm.
Winery & Grape Grower
In addition to the home farm, the Caroline Cellars Winery also grows grapes on another 11 acre farm. The suitable soil, location and the Lakeits’ passion for wine has resulted in some great vintages and VQA wines. The white, red and rose wines along with the fruit and dessert wines produced here also include award-winning ones like the 2010 Riesling, 2013 Farmer’s Rose and the 2009 Chardonnay Icewine among others.
