Ontario’s first certified organic winery, the Frogpond Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake uses sustainable practices to produce some amazing wines. There is a stringent process and detailed checking involved to get the organic tag. The production of wine here has to adhere to the Canadian government Organic Standards verified by a third-party certifier. Pro-Cert Organic has given the organic tag for all the wines at Frogpond Farm.
No chemical based herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and other synthetic products are used in the vineyard and during the making of wine. In addition to this, the grapes are grown in a clean environment and a balanced ecosystem has been created for the best results. There is a diverse variety of plants, birds and animals on the farm that help in maintaining this balance. For example, the guinea fowls eat the bugs in the vineyard resulting in a healthy produce. Clean, renewable power is used at the farm, further strengthening its natural credentials.
Visiting this farm is a learning experience for the visitors who not only get to tour the vineyard and taste award-winning wines but also understand about organic practices. Some of the award-winning organic wines produced here include the Gamay Noir, Chardonnay, Vidal and others.
