Built on a historic site at Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Hinterbrook winery was initially the family farm of the Nickels since 1963. At first, the family grew peaches, cherries, pears and plums on the farm. It was only in 1998 that Phil Nickel came up with the idea of growing Vinifera grapes and that vision eventually led to the establishment of a winery.
Today, it produces several premium wines using an eco-conscious model that leaves an almost zero carbon footprint. Along with energy-efficient lighting and geothermal heating and cooling, one of the best eco-friendly features at Hinterbrook is that the winery’s electricity is supplied by a 1000 sq. feet solar panel. This panel tracks the position of the sun to meet the complete electricity needs of the winery and also produces extra energy for the local hydro grid. Other than this, rainwater collection and minimum usage of chemicals for sanitation purposes are some of the other eco-conscious steps followed here.
