Lakeside Park Carousel

Lakeside Park Carousel

Experience happiness for just 5 cents when you ride the Lakeside Park Carousel at Port Dalhousie in St Catharines, Ontario.

100+ Year Old Carousel

Both adults and children can enjoy a ride on this carousel that is a Charles I.D. Looff original, hand-carved between 1898 and 1905. The historic carousel is one of only nine antique hand-carved carousels in Canada as well as a large one, making it a unique ride. Overall, there are only 350 antique hand-carved carousels in North America make this carousel an important attraction.

In 1921, the carousel was purchased from an amusement park in Scarborough, Toronto for an amusement park in Port Dalhousie. The park at Port Dalhousie consisted of 58 attractions and the carousel with 68 animal seats was a wonderful new attraction.

None of the other attractions remain today but this beautiful carousel stands proudly, bringing smiles on the faces of people who enjoy a ride on it. Animals featured include:

  • Camels
  • Giraffes
  • Goats
  • Horses
  • Lions and more.

Four chariots make up the ride that moves to accompanying music played by an antique Frati band organ which uses a system of paper music rolls.

Maintained Carousel

The spectacular hand-carved animals have been restored by Friends of the Carousel enabling riders to have a magical ride. Of particular interest is the original Looff lion that has its head turned towards spectators as it moves around. It is only one of five existing Looff lions in North America. Another original lion was stolen in the 70s and replaced by one carved in 2004 by Friends of the Carousel. Other problems in the past including floods threatened the carousel a couple of times but it survived and today, it continues to entertain people.
