When Ewald Reif bought a piece of land on the banks of the Niagara River in 1977, he was carrying over a winemaking tradition that began in Germany years and years ago. The Reif Estate Winery was founded in 1983 and a few years later, Klaus W. Reif took over as the owner of the winery. The winery at Niagara-on-the-Lake produces an amazing range of wines that grows on its 125 acre vineyard and it has all come out of Klaus’ belief that "great wines start in the vineyard".

Their wines reflect the maturity and unique terroir of the Reif vineyard. The wines produced with grapes harvested from their oldest vineyard blocks can be savoured in their First Growth Collection. The winery also has a history of producing great icewines with the first batch of Vidal Icewine coming out in 1984. With more than 100 Gold Awards since then, Reif’s icewines are considered to be some of the best in the Niagara region.
Another highlight of the winery is its sustainable winemaking practices that include using compost of the previous year’s pruned and chipped vines, leaves, seeds, skins, etc., as nutrients for the soil.
