Ben Folds with yMusic

Ben Folds and his new band, yMusic, will be coming to Lewiston this summer to take part in Lewiston New York's Artpark's Summer Concert Series.

Ben Folds is a noted singer-songwriter along with being a record producer. For five years he fronted the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five and received considerable attention before touring around the world as a solo artist. By 2011, the Ben Folds Five had reunited and the singer-songwriter has worked with talent as diverse as “Weird Al” Yankovic, Regina Spektor, and even William Shatner. Along with writing and record producing, Folds has contributed to soundtracks of movies such as “Over the Hedge” and Hoodwinked!” and even produced the first solo album of Amada Palmer.

Ben Folds Musical History

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Ben started playing the piano at the age of 9 and was being influenced by popular artists of the time such as Billy Joel and Elton John. In high school, Ben was developing his skills as a bassist and drummer along with being a pianist.

By the late 1980s, Folds formed the band Majosha with his friend Millard Powers where they produced several small records over the next few years. When Majosha broke up, Folds played drums with a group called Pots and Pans, but that lasted only a few weeks. However, when Ben formed the band Bus Stop with his brother Chuck and drummer Eddie Walker, he managed to get a music publishing contract with Scott Siman which led to Ben working with a variety of musicians as a session player starting in 1990.
While Folds was enjoying his stay in Nashville, he stayed in touch with his roots playing in different location in the US until eventually moving back to North Carolina and forming Ben Folds Five in 1994.

Ben Folds Musical Albums

The self-titled debut album of Ben Folds Five released in 1995 was followed a couple of years later by Whatever and Ever Amen and in 1998 by NB Photos. Whatever and Ever Amen created several singles which included “Song for the Dumped”, “Battle of Who Could Care Less” and “Brick”. By 1999, the group had released their final album before breaking up, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner which managed to include the hit, “Army”.

Ben Folds Five managed to garner a considerable amount of attention, but no big hit singles which helped lead to their breakup. They did manage to get more attention overseas than in the US, but the unique style has limited mainstream appeal. After the band broke up in 2001, Ben Folds continued to perform solo and enjoy his freedom which is part of his remarkable creativity and energy. Ben Folds Five did a one-shot reunion gig in 2008, but stayed apart until 2011 when they got back together for the album The Sound of the Life of the Mind. Recently, Ben Folds was one of the judges for the NBC series, “The Sing Off” in which contestants sang a cappella.

Today, Ben Folds continues to tour with his group and manages to engage in a variety of one-off performances which only endear him to his fans. The eclectic Folds has managed to carve a unique niche in the rock ‘n roll field while maintaining his sense of humor.
