A man who wears many hats, Chris Rock is a hugely popular stand-up comedian. With sell-out performances in several parts of the world, Rock brings a lot of his personal experiences to his comedy routines. His shows explore a wide range of subjects including current events, African American culture, sexuality, politics, and racism. Rock has received several accolades during his career including Emmy and Grammy awards. In a poll on Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time”, Rock attained the fifth position on the list. The comedian’s tryst with fame and popularity started in his early 20s when he did stand-up comedy as well as small acting roles. It was with NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1989 that Rock became a popular name in the country. After a few years at SNL, Rock did a show for HBO titled Chris Rock: Big Ass Jokes. He firmly established himself as a much-in-demand comedian after his second show for HBO Bring the Pain. The show won two Emmys in 1997 for Best Writing and Outstanding Special.
His comedy albums Roll with the New and Bigger & Blacker received Grammy Awards in 1998 and 2000 respectively. The Chris Rock Show which aired from 1997 to 2000 further cemented his position and also won an Emmy in 1999. Another HBO show by Rock Kill The Messenger landed an Emmy as well. By the early 2000s, Rock had gained international fame for his comedic skills and performed at several cities in North America. Later in the 2000s, he also went on to perform in the UK and other parts of Europe, Australia and South Africa. In 2006, his comedy album Never Scared got him another Grammy Award.

Everybody Hates Chris, an American sitcom that ran from 2005 to 2009 was also a huge success. Rock’s experiences during his childhood at a white-dominated school in Brooklyn as well as white neighbourhoods reflected in the sitcom and his comedy routines. Today he is equally popular with whites as well as African Americans for his hard-hitting comedy shows.
Rock also explored his acting skills in several movies. From a small role in Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987, he went on to act in prominent roles in many movies. Grown Ups, Bad Company, Death at a Funeral, The Longest Yard, Dogma and Nurse Betty are some of his popular films. Rock also hosted the Academy Awards twice, in 2005 and 2016. He continues to entertain audiences around the world with his stand-up comedy shows.
