After a brief time off in the 1980's, The Doobie Brothers have been going strong, touring the world in front of sold out audiences. They will be coming to Niagara Falls for two live performances this October.
The Doobie Brothers in Niagara Falls
The Doobie Brothers, a rock band formed in 1970, are mostly associated with the body of work from their first decade. And these songs do remain their most iconic. The group first formed in name with John Hartman, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and Dave Shogren, playing around Northern California.
Their first, self-titled album went relatively unnoticed but 1972’s Toulouse Street got attention, particularly with ‘Listen to the Music’. In 1973 they released their third album The Captain and Me, which has since gone double-platinum and includes classic songs ‘China Grove’ and ‘Long Train Runnin’.
The most iconic period of the band was in the mid-1970s, when (to simplify the constant name changes in the line-up) Shogren had moved on and guitarist Tiran Porter and drummer/songwriter Keith Knudsen had joined up.
Minute by Minute with The Doobie Brothers
With their established successes and albums like 1974’s What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits adding singles like ‘Black Water’ to the list of charting hits, the Doobie Brothers reached their peak exposure with 1978’s Minute By Minute – a multi-Grammy Award winning album, and source of the single ‘What A Fool Believes’.
Suffering from the exertions of the rock and roll lifestyle by 1980, the group disbanded and didn’t tour again as the Doobie Brothers until 1987, originally for a single show to promote aid to war veterans. The show sold out and the band has been a steady presence again ever since.
The Doobie Brothers 2016 Tour
In 2016, founding members Simmons and Johnston are touring with a revitalised Doobie Brothers, including other 70s alumni Bill Payne and John McFee. They’ll be coming to Niagara Falls in October, playing two nights only (Oct 6–7) at the Avalon Ballroom. Set to play many of their classics and a few new hits, the Doobie Brothers are still a strong act even close to half a century after their origins.
