Engaged Play Plot
The play is a situational comedy about Cheviot Hill, a wealthy bachelor who has a weakness for women and romantic involvements. The plot thickens when a train that Hill is travelling on is derailed by the residents of a village in Scotland. Derailing trains is a profitable business for the villagers who give the passengers their homes to stay in for the night, of course, in exchange for a good amount of money. Hill along with his friend Belvawney are caught up in the situation along with Belinda who has eloped with Belvawney. Hilarious complications arise when Hill’s roving eye settles on a Scottish lass with whom he gets engaged. Furthermore, he gets accidentally married to Belinda in a Scottish ceremony. What makes matters even more complicated is the fact that Hill is also engaged to Minnie, a young lady from London.
What else could go wrong for Hill? Apparently everything because he receives terrible news of a financial nature in the midst of his romantic complications. What happens next forms the crux of the play where each situation and dialogue is laced with rib-tickling humour. The play has been directed for the Shaw Festival by Morris Panych and the set has been designed by Ken MacDonald. The original music has been composed by Ryan DeSouza.
