Early Career

The Fray's early years were primarily based around Denver , where the band members attended school. By spring 2002, former schoolmates Joe King and Issac Slade reconnected amid jam sessions that would eventually lead to them writing songs. King later added drummer Zach Johnson and Slade's younger brother, Caleb, to the band; Caleb was later asked to leave, a move that inspired their song, 'Over My Head (Cable Car).' Johnson also left the band to attend art school.

Later on, former bandmates Ben Wysocki and Dave Welsh were added to the band, as drummer and guitarist respectively. The band, after seeking outside opinions via randomly picking names from pieces of paper, settled on 'The Fray' as a band name.

First Album

The Fray released their first record, Movement EP, in 2002. By the next year, they released Reason EP, which was produced by Aaron Johnson, the co-producer of How to Save a Life. Both records received mostly positive reviews, but they wouldn't gain wide acclaim until much later.

After a few rejections from Denver's KTCL, the station accepted a demo of 'Over My Head (Cable Car)' for airplay. Westword, an alternative newsweekly, helped push the band to popularity by reviewing their work, eventually naming them 'Best New Band' in 2004. Epic Records A&R representative Daniel Davis discovered the band through a Westword article; by December 2004, the band was officially signed to Epic.

'Grey's Anatomy' Fame

The Fray's debut album, How to Save a Life, was released by September 13, 2005, said to combine traditional rock with an alternative rock style. 'Over My Head (Cable Car)' was the first single released from the album, eventually peaking at no. 37 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song also peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by February 2006.

The song, 'How to Save a Life,' was featured in a second season episode of hit show, Grey's Anatomy. Although it wasn't a single at the time, the song quickly entered the Hot 100 chart by April 2006. In August 2006, ABC announced that the song would be used for promoting the Grey's Anatomy season premiere.

After the promotion started, the song quickly peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart, surpassing the peak position of their first single. It eventually tied in seventh place for the Hot 100 longest charting single of all time, sharing the position with Santana's 'Smooth.'
