On June 20th 2015, Canadians will gather together to honour one of the country’s best known national heroines-- Laura Secord. The Friends of Laura Secord (FLS), a not-for-profit community group will organize special activities on this day including the 35 km Laura Secord Walk.
Story of Laura Secord
The story of Laura Secord is one of courage and determination, dating back to June 21, 1813. At her home in Queenston, Laura overheard American officers plotting to capture a British outpost located at John DeCew's House near Beaver Dams, 32 km away. Leaving her unwell husband and children at home, Laura embarked on a journey by foot to the outpost to inform the Britishers. Walking across difficult terrain and enemy lines through humid weather for many hours, Laura finally met some Native allies of the British. They led her to Lt. FitzGibbon to whom she delivered the message. This helped the British to mobilize the aboriginal forces in advance and ambush the Americans. 600 American troops surrendered at the Battle of Beaver Dams–all due to the bravery of an exceptional woman, Laura Secord.
Laura Secord Homestead
To commemorate this day, the FLS has organized activities for everyone on the grounds of the Laura Secord Homestead, the original, restored home of the brave lady. You can explore the homestead, visit with costumed interpreters, take part in period activities and games and munch on food at the snack bar.
Laura Secord Day Events
The most important activity of the day re-enacts the actual trail travelled by Laura – the 32 km Laura Secord Walk. The FLS, along with historians and trail experts have recreated the path that Laura took from Queenston to DeCew House in Thorold that covers ancient forested Native trails as well as city sidewalks. The first re-enactment of the walk took place on June 22, 2013, 200 years after the historic journey undertaken by Laura. This walk has become an annual event and this year’s walk will be held on June 20th. Anyone can participate at a registration charge of $20. There are 5 categories:
