Jewel grew up in Alaska and was inclined towards music from a young age. She learned music from her father Atz Kilcher and they even sang together at local events. The singer majored in classical voice and art from a fine arts school in Michigan. During her teenage years, she learned to play the guitar and also started writing songs. Jewel had to struggle initially doing street performances, eating meals by singing at restaurants and even living in a car for some time.
One of her performances at the The Inner Change Cafe in San Diego finally led to a deal with Atlantic Records. At the age of 21, she released her debut album Pieces of You which became one of the highest selling debut albums ever, selling more than 12 million copies. Some songs in the album went on to feature in the Billboard Hot 100 chart including Who Will Save Your Soul, Foolish Games and You were Meant for Me. In fact, Jewel secured Grammy nominations in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category for Foolish Games and Who Will Save Your Soul and another nomination for Best New Artist.
