The Niagara Falls Marathon is right around the corner, taking place in late October 2017
One Marathon, Two Countries
There are a few different distances and running options for the day – the one thing they have in common is that they all finish in front of the falls. Only the full marathon is international, starting on the Lincoln Parkway in the New York township and crossing the Peace Bridge into Canada. The other categories – including a half-marathon and options for 10km, 5km and children’s runs – all start at various locations on or near the Niagara Parkway.
The 2016 Niagara Falls International Marathon (26.2 miles/42.2 KM) is the headline event, and it comes with a twist: It is one of only three Marathons courses that take place in both Canada and the United States. The course starts in Buffalo, near the world renowned Albright Knox Art Gallery. One of the hidden benefits of running the Marathon is that runners will have access to the art gallery for an hour or so before it opens to the public. Relax, take in some amazing art, and put things into perspective before heading out for 26.2 miles.
Because of the international circumstances of the full marathon category, there are a couple of conditions for entry. Valid ID and a passport are essential on race day (North American-based border crossers can present a NEXUS card in lieu of a passport).
Niagara Falls Marathon Courses
The Half Marathon course begins near the town of Fort Erie Ontario, and continues along the Niagara Parkway into Niagara Falls. The course is 13.1 Miles in distance and has a 6 hour time limit.
Both the 5K and 10K courses are out and back, beginning and ending at Rapidsview Park (about 3000 feet from the lip of Niagara Falls). The courses are advantageous for the patient runner, as the course begins with a slight uphill that turns into downhill during the looped conclusion of the race.
This destination marathon is one of the highlights of the race calendar. This race has grown from a tiny affair in 1974 to a major event.
Niagara Falls Marathon Expo
Accompanying this event is the Health and Fitness Expo at the Scotiabank Convention Centre, along Stanley Avenue on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Not only is this where the runners pick up their kits before race day, but it’s a full expo in and of itself, showcasing local health and fitness industries.
The entire weekend begins at the Scotiabank Convention Centre for race registration and the expo. The Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa is located less than 200 feet from the convention centre, making our hotel the ideal location for runners. The rest of the weekend includes a pasta party, speakers and various running events. For more information visit: http://niagarafallsmarathon.com/
About 6000 runners are expected to take to the tracks on marathon day, currently scheduled for October 30th in 2016. Registration ends about a week beforehand. Whether you feel game to take on the 40km+ full marathon or to take part in the less intensive runs, it’s a great event and just one more example of how easy it can be for friendly nations like the US and Canada to stage fun, bilateral events.
