The singer and instrumentalist played the piano as a child and was also a part of a band during his teenage years. It was in 1972 that he got his first major break helming the music for the Toronto production of Godspell. He enjoyed further success as a band member on Saturday Night Live (SNL) between 1975 and 1980. It was a couple of years later that he took over as music director on the Late Night With David Letterman on NBC. On this show, he led The World’s Most Dangerous Band and they continued to perform from 1982 to 1993. The show then shifted to CBS and was renamed the Late Show with David Letterman. On this show, Shaffer helmed the CBS Orchestra from 1993–2015. In fact, he also guest-hosted the show a couple of times during Letterman’s absence.
Besides Shaffer on the keyboards, The World’s Most Dangerous Band that formed in 1982 consisted of Will Lee (bass); Hiram Bullock (guitar) and Steve Jordan (drums). Bullock and Jordan left the band a few years later and were replaced by Sid McGinnis and Anton Fig. A couple of other instrumentalists too played on the band.
Shaffer went on to release two solo albums of which Coast to Coast procured a Grammy nomination. Throughout his career, he has recorded with several prominent artists including:
- B.B King
- Diana Ross
- Donald Fagen
Shaffer notched another feather in his cap with It's Raining Men, a song which he co-wrote with Paul Jabara. The original song recorded in 1982 by The Weather Girls became a huge rage and was an international success. Its popularity also resulted in a couple of cover versions including that of Geri Halliwell in 2001.
