American country music has seen a resurgence of sorts in recent years. Long maligned outside of its established fan base, a new generation of country music artists have been hugely successful in forging the new ‘country pop’ scene and bringing country music sensibilities to a wider audience, more consistently than at any other point in music’s recent history. There are a lot of bands and solo artists responsible for this trend, but arguably one of the most recognisable names in this field is Rascal Flatts.

The trio of Rascal Flatts – Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney – formed in 1999 in Ohio, and were quickly signed up to Disney-owned Lyric Street Records for their self-titled debut album in 2000. The album quickly received attention, and one of its singles ‘I’m Movin On’ was awarded a Song of the Year accolade from the Academy of Country Music.
They would release six albums with Lyric Street before the company’s closure in 2010, with a steady growth in popularity. 2002’s Melt would give the group their first number one country charting single in ‘These Days’, while 2004’s Feels Like Today would add two more chart-toppers.
It was with 2005’s My and My Gang that the band broke through and ascended the adult contemporary charts as well. The two top singles from the album are still synonymous with the band’s success – their cover of ‘Life is a Highway’ was a flagship song for Pixar’s 2006 film Cars, and ‘What Hurts The Most’ is still arguably their most successful single to date.
After a greatest hits album and 2009’s Unstoppable, Rascal Flatts moved to Big Machine Records – also known for being the label of Taylor Swift – and have to date released three albums with the label.
As one of America’ most awarded country groups, any show with Rascal Flatts is a crowd-pleaser. Known for big, dynamic shows (described on their website as ‘state-of-the art, house-rocking extravaganzas’), their 2016 tour has been highly anticipated. The band will reach Niagara Falls for two nights, October 4 and 5, at Fallsview Casino’s Avalon Theatre. As a paragon of the modern country pop scene, they’re definitely worth seeing live.
