Curling began as a Scottish pastime and has been a traditional sport there for hundreds of years, but in the modern world no one has taken to curling like the Canadians. The Royal Montreal Curling Club is the oldest sport institution in North America, and a quick recap of Winter Olympics and World Curling Championship records from 1998 onwards shows Canada to be internationally dominant in the sport, for both men’s and women’s events.
St.Catharines Scotties' Tournament of Hearts
From February 18–26 in 2017, the Meridian Centre in St Catharines will host the Scotties’ Tournament of Hearts, an elite national curling competition with women’s teams from all over Canada competing. St Catharines has hosted national curling tournaments before but this is the first time it has won the Scotties bid, which is the most prestigious women’s championship in the country. The winning team will go on to represent Canada at the World Curling Championships, and is also a step towards qualification for the next Winter Olympics.
Premier Canadian Curling Event
As of November 2016 the schedule of match draws is finalised, and tickets are currently available. Each day of competition will have a draw of up to four matches. Bundle passes like the Classic Full Event Package reserve a seat for every draw and comes with extra frills like lounge access and autograph sessions – but there are numerous types of passes available depending on needs.
As the event draws closer keep checking in with the Scotties 2017 official site (http://www.curling.ca/2017scotties/) for up-to-date information on other events during the competition. Entertainment events, including interviews with athletes and live entertainment at the Meridian Centre’s HeartStop Lounge, will have full schedules released before long, and plenty of other fan and family events are in the works as well.
National competitions like the Scotties’ have only been growing more popular in recent years. Curling is not a fast paced non-stop sport like hockey, but it is extremely competitive and highly strategic, often tagged as ‘chess on ice’. The chance to be there in the flesh at a national event hosting the best the nation has to offer is something anyone in Ontario at the time should take advantage of.
