2017 Victoria Day Niagara Falls

2017 Victoria Day Niagara Falls

Queen Victoria Day has long been Canada’s way of welcoming the summer months. A long weekend dedicated to the Queen’s birthday (ceremonially both Victoria’s and the current monarch’s), the three-day celebration is nothing but festive.

Technically, the holiday is only recognised on the Canadian side of the border, but the whole of Niagara Falls can be your playground. Don’t be shy checking out things to do on both sides of the international line, as long as you have a passport or associated pass ready to make your passage a smooth one.

There’s a lot to do in a single long weekend, and the sampler below is just to get you started:

Niagara Falls Ontario Victoria Day Weekend Activities

  • Soak in the outdoors: spring’s left its mark by now and the soggy weather has passed by to the point where there’s no more excuses to go out and see what’s in bloom. Head to the Botanical Gardens to see why Niagara Falls is sometimes billed at the unofficial daffodil capital of North America. The butterfly conservatory at the gardens is also running their ‘Wild Ontario’ exhibit.

  • Catch a show: sometimes you can’t go past the classics, and the Greg Frewin Theatre is hosting the inaugural Niagara Falls Elvis Festival from May 19–21, with gala shows, food and regular competitions (including Elvis impersonator contests, of course).

  • Have a meal out: it might be a weekend tailored for family fun and making the most of the warmer seasons, but a lavish dinner out is just as good sometimes. The popular Oh Canada Eh? Dinner Theatre has been pulling out all the stops for its shows in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary, so there’s no better time to make a reservation. And for an affair with a touch less showmanship, many restaurants along Fallsview Avenue, such as Morton’s Grille, offer a more lavish (and, with advance booking, private) dining experience.

  • Catch the fireworks: it wouldn’t be a long weekend in Niagara without a top-tier fireworks display. Grab a vantage point at Queen Victoria Park or get on a ferry to see the show on either Friday, Sunday or Monday night.
