Biking in Niagara

Biking is a great way to explore the Niagara region that is rich in its landscape and has an abundance of historical sites as well as several amazing attractions. Families, groups and solo travellers find it convenient and interesting to head along the various trails and discover the beauty of the region. One such delightful route is the Niagara River Recreation Trail that runs along the Canadian side of the Niagara River. It's considered the best local Niagara Falls Cycling Route. It is a non-motorized path that was constructed in 1986 and has since then been a favourite with cyclists.

It is beautiful in every season and has a wide range of attractions and picturesque landscapes all along the way. The trail extends from Fort Erie all the way up to Fort George at Niagara-on-the-Lake, a distance of around 53 kms. There are several places on the trail that you will see en route such as Queenston and Niagara Falls. There are a number of places for Niagara Falls Bike Rentals. The trail can be divided into four main parts:

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake to Queenston
  • Queenston to the Whirlpool Aero Car
  • Chippawa to Black Creek
  • Black Creek to Fort Erie.

Biking Niagara-on-the-Lake

Throughout this entire distance, you can see historical and natural attractions such as the Niagara River, the Niagara Falls, the Whirlpool at Niagara Gorge, and over 100 monuments and plaques that can be found at various points along the trail. At Niagara-on-the-Lake, you can take a break to visit one of the many scenic award-winning wineries that are located near the trail. You will also find shops and restaurants all along the route where you can relax for a bit before continuing your ride. Most of these places have bicycle racks and restrooms so you are assured of a comfortable journey. There’s a lot of farmland all around and you can stop at stalls that sell fresh fruit and vegetables to taste Niagara’s bounty.

There are distance markings every 500 metres along the trail so that you can keep a track of the distance you have covered. You can always stop to admire the scenery or visit the attractions along the way but ensure that you follow all traffic rules and regulations to have a safe trip.
