Celebrating Canada 150

Celebrating Canada 150 in the Falls

2017 is a very special year for Canada as the country is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year. The country has made tremendous progress during these years and is a force to reckon with in the world today. To mark this momentous occasion, there will be several activities, from local events to nationwide celebrations, held across the country throughout the year, including Niagara Falls.

Canada 150 Celebration

The word sesquicentennial which means 150 years is a tongue twister alright but it is indeed an apt word for celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary of the Confederation. It was on July 1, 1867 that four provinces:

  • Ontario
  • Quebec
  • New Brunswick
  • Nova Scotia

formed the confederation that represented Canada. Eventually, a total of 13 provinces and territories went on to be a part of the country. And 150 years later, there’s so much to celebrate as the country has grown by leaps and bounds in every field. The celebrations began with a bang on December 31st, 2016 and going forward there will be several such events throughout 2017. A special Canada 150 logo too was unveiled on the occasion. Canada 150 is a great way for people to feel a sense of oneness and community, express their love for the nation and contribute to its future growth.

Several events will be held in all the provinces and territories. These include National Flag of Canada Day on February 15, National Aboriginal Day on June 21, Multiculturalism Day on June 27 and of course Canada Day on July 1. The country’s capital region will also have a mammoth Canada Day celebratory weekend. Several more 150 in the Falls and nationwide events are lined up and these include celebrations through:

  • Culture
  • Dance
  • Food and drink
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Travel

and much more.

Canada 150 Activities

As part of the celebrations, you can get free admission into National Parks, National Marine Conservation Areas and National Historic Sites operated by Parks Canada throughout the year with a Parks Canada Discovery Pass. It is an amazing way to explore the country and understand facets of the country’s history.

As a nation, Canada has achieved tremendous progress be it the country’s high position on the UN human development index’s standards of living, its inclusiveness, and diversity or environmental initiatives. Rapid advances in science and technology, and a wonderful arts and culture scene are some remarkable aspects of Canada today. Every province and territory have lined up events to celebrate these achievements of the country and Niagara Falls too has several activities lined up throughout 2017. In fact, there are 150 major events that will be held on 150 days to celebrate 150 years of the confederation. Recently, Lonely Planet declared that Canada is its number one destination for travelers in 2017.

Canada 150 is a great opportunity to look back and celebrate the country’s glorious achievements and it is also the right occasion to consolidate the present and march forward on the path to progress!
