Niagara Craft Cider

Niagara Craft Cider

Known for its award winning wines as well as craft beer, the Niagara region has in the past few years seen a sudden spike in the demand for alcoholic ‘hard cider’.

Craft Cider

Cider is a fermented alcoholic drink usually made from apple juice and also pear juice. Flavourings of other fruit juices too go into the making of this beverage that usually contains 5 to 7 % alcohol content in the province of Ontario. During prohibition this alcoholic beverage witnessed a decline but now the cider industry is growing by leaps and bounds.

Locally Grown Craft Cider

Currently, locally grown pub-style craft cider is a favourite among drinkers of this beverage. In fact, if the trend continues, it won’t be wrong to say that Ontario can build a strong international reputation for high quality cider in a few years. Several different kinds of ciders are being made, each with its own unique taste and a lot of innovation is being done to come up with new flavours.

There are various places in Niagara-on-the-Lake that produce wonderful ciders. Sunnybrook Farm Estate Winery creates craft cider with a premium blend of 100% Ontario Heritage Apples. Sunnybrook’s brand Ironwood Hard Cider’s strong and genuine drinks are quite popular. In 2015, the Niagara College Teaching Winery produced and released its first cider called Cider 101. Hard cider lovers will enjoy the taste of this drink that contains 5.5% alcohol. It is fresh and fruity with traces of vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and a dash of roasted hazelnut. Small Talk Vineyards’ Shiny Apple Cider too has some amazing flavours with its full apple complexity plus strains of pear and caramelized toffee apple. Peller Estates Private Reserve’s No Boats On Sunday Cider is another great drink. Created by using 100% Canadian grown apples, this crisp and refreshing cider is a flavoursome beverage.
