Long known as Canada’s wine capital, Niagara’s Craft Beer scene is exploding, with numerous breweries, a college program dedicated to brewing and a number of Beer Festivals.
Niagara Region Breweries
Niagara Brewing Company
Located on Clifton Hill, Niagara Brewing Company is a growing brewery with immaculate décor, a great menu, excellent meeting space and above all, an interesting & varied selection of Craft Beers. The brewery is one of the few in the region to create a lager. They also produce IPA’s, Stouts, Radlers and a variety of seasonal brews.
Oast House Brewers
Known for their bright red barn, amazing location on Niagara Stone Road and great beer, Oast is one of the most popular breweries in the region. With long-time LCBO distribution and easy drinking beers such as Saison and Barnraiser, a visit to Oast is recommended while in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Located in a former church, Silversmith Brewing is known for their Black Lager. This German style Lager is as black as a Guinness and uses only 4 ingredients. The brewery has also begun producing a number of additional beers, such as an English Pale Ale and a Wheat Ale.
Niagara College Teaching Brewery
Many postulate that the abundance of local breweries is due to two factors: the pre-existing wine industry & related contacts, and Niagara College Teaching Brewery. The program has produced brewers that have gone on to perfect their craft all over the world, including the province of Ontario and even around the Niagara Region. Local breweries Silversmith, Oast and Exchange Brewery have ties to the program, and Niagara Brewing Company frequently gives access and on-site lectures to students.
With the continued notoriety and growth of the program, it’s a safe bet that the Niagara Region brewing community will continue to grow for years to come.
This year two beer festivals have been planned for Niagara Falls.
Niagara Craft Beer Festival
The first, and original, is the Niagara Craft Beer Festival, taking place August 5th – August 7th. This years festival has been moved to gorgeous Port Dalhouise Park in St.Catharines.
