Popular Icewine Wineries

Popular Icewine Wineries

Red and white wines are much in demand in the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake but icewines are also becoming increasingly popular. Here are some of the best icewine producing wineries in this lovely town.

Joseph’s Estate Wines

Joseph Pohorly established one of the three original cottage wineries in Niagara in 1979 and made the first icewine for Hillebrand in 1983. In doing so, he became one of the early pioneers of icewine in Canada. Later, Joseph’s Estate Wines was founded in 1996 and since then it is known for its wonderful VQA wines–red, white, speciality wines, sherry, port and especially the icewines.

Their 2006 Vidal Icewine VQA garnered accolades at the 2015 IWSC (International Wine and Spirit Competition) in London, England by winning the ‘Silver Outstanding’ medal. The IWSC is one of the largest international wine competitions and 90 countries participated in the competition this year.

Inniskillin

The world leader in icewine, VQA label wines from Inniskillin are sold in over 74 countries around the world. Inniskillin wines are on the lists of famous restaurants and major airlines. It is also the number one distributed wine in Global Travel Retail.

The winery has been credited with driving the international market for Canadian Icewine. The fascinating process for producing icewines is steered by the weather as the grapes can only be harvested if the temperature is continuously below minus eight degrees Celsius. The result is a rich and highly concentrated juice that is then fermented over the next few months. The final result is an icewine with intense flavours.

Inniskillin produced its first icewine in 1984 and since then, it has won a staggering number of Canadian as well as international awards. This includes gold at the Vinifera Icewine Awards for its 2012 Sparkling Cabernet Franc Icewine, another gold at the International Icewine Challenge for its 2011 Oak Aged Vidal Icewine, and at the All Canadian Wine Championships, it bagged a double gold for its 2012 Vidal Icewine.

Palatine Hills Estate Winery

The family-run and operated Palatine winery has been producing quality wines for over four decades. The Neufeld family’s grape growing abilities and the unique terroir of the region has resulted in a collection of wonderful red and white wines. It also produces great icewines–the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Icewine was the gold medal winner at the Canadian Wine Awards.

Open around the year, Palatine conducts various tours for its visitors where you can see the vineyard and understand the wine-making process. In fact, if you visit during winter, you can see the icewine groundwork in progress.

Strewn Winery

Made in classic European style, the wines at Strewn Winery have several varieties of reds and whites. Innovative icewines produced here are also very popular. Vidal, a French hybrid grape is used to produce icewine as the tough skin of the fruit is perfect for icewine production during the winter.

Strewn Winery has the honour of producing Niagara region's first barrel fermented Riesling Icewine, a gold medal winner at the Toronto Wine & Cheese Show 2008.
